Vandals hit a shul in Jerusalem's Kiryat Yovel neighborhood, damaging Sifrei Torah, r'l, 'Reminiscent of darkest days of the Jewish people.'

Unknown vandals broke into a Jerusalem shul overnight, causing serious damage to the shul's Sifrei Torah, r'l, and furniture, police said Tuesday morning.

The shul targeted by the vandals is located in the Kiryat Yovel neighborhood, an area that has seen tensions rise between some of the area’s secular residents and its religious community, following an influx of Charedim looking for affordable housing in the capital.

Authorities say the neighborhood’s French shul, Siach Yisrael, was vandalized Monday night, though the discovery was only made Tuesday morning.

The vandals broke into the Aron HaKodesh, poured acid on the Sifrei Torah and damaged the furniture.

In addition to the shul's Sifrei Torah, numerous siddurim and sefarim were damaged or destroyed.

Shul officials notified local police, and an investigation into the break-in has been opened.

Criminal investigators closed the shul and began collecting evidence.

Shmuel Marciano, a member of the Jerusalem city council who davens in the shul that was desecrated in Kiryat Yovel for Weissberg in Bahadrei, said: "I never saw such a shocking thing ... They cut the Aron HaKodesh with a disc and threw the Sifrei Torah scrolls on the floor"

“This morning we were notified regarding a shocking case of the shul's desecration and the destruction of Sifrei Torah in Kiryat Yovel,” said Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion.

“This terrible incident reminds us of the dark times for the Jewish people. We cannot allow such crimes to happen today. I have just spoken to the Jerusalem District police commander and I am certain that the Israel Police will soon get their hands on the criminals."

Last year, vandals defaced a shul on the edge of Kiryat Yovel, and have on multiple occasions vandalized the neighborhood’s Eruv
