Jerusalem, Israel - Dec. 31, 2018 - Mishpat Ivri, aspects of halakha relevant to "non-religious" or "secular" law, was the theme of an international rabbinical conference held at the Ramada Hotel in Yerushalayim. The World Zionist Organization (WZO) with RCA Israel organized the Yom Iyun for Rabbanim, under the title, "Mishpat Ivri and its Integration into the Legal System in the State of Israel."

Rav Yehiel Wasserman, WZO Head of the Center for Religious Affairs in the Diaspora, opened the Yom Iyun, which included a long list of distinguished speakers.

Israeli attorney and law professor Aviad Hacohen, dean of the Sha'arei Mishpat Academic College, provided a 4-page handout and examples of Israeli laws, involving Jewish Law and Beit Din, and Kashrus issues.

Also on the program were two Members of Knesset Nissan Slomiansky and  Eli Ben Dahan.

Dayan HaRav HaGaon Shlomo Dichovsky Shlita, a former head of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel Batei Din, was a keynote speaker in the morning, and emphasized that  halakhic rulings must be implemented with discretion.

"Cannot beat them, join them," Rav Yosef Carmel, Head of Eretz Hemdah Institute for Advanced Jewish Studies in Yerushalayim and Av Beis Din of the Eretz Hemdah which trains dayanim, repeated twice in English for emphasis, in his remarks during the full day Hebrew program.  Much of Israeli State Law is based on "Sulieman or Queen Elizabeth," from Ottoman days or British Mandate, and not based on Jewish laws going back to Moshe Rabbeinu.

Also presenting at the conference were Rav Ronny Figdor from Melbourne, Australia, and Rav Yosef Blau from Yeshiva University in New York.

Among the over one hundred rabbis participating in the Yom Iyun were former Maryland residents, Dr. Charles Siegman, Rabbi Elan Adler and Rabbi Shimon (Billy) Altshul.

The new RCA Israel President Rabbi Ellis Bloch and Rabbi Reuvan Tradburks Director of the Rabbinical Council of America, Israel Division, participated in the program, along with WZO staff members.
