Baltimore, MD - Jan. 8, 2019 - On Tuesday evening, December 25, an overflow crowd attended Chinuch Atzmai’s annual Baltimore Evening of Chizuk, held at the shul of Harav Yissochor Dov Eichenstien Shlit”a, Mercaz Torah U’tefillah.

The evening was opened by the chairman, Mr. Nechemia Weinreb, who pointed out that Chinuch Atzmai maintains a network of 265 schools, 125 of which are kiruv schools with a student body of over 30,000 children from traditional or unaffiliated underprivileged homes.  As the cost of transporting these children to school has been cut by the government, the Baltimore community has taken it upon itself to sponsor the transportation for the children who attend the schools in Ramle.

Rabbi Yosef Pollak mesmerized the crowd, and related tear-jerking stories of his visit to several Chinuch Atzmai schools throughout Eretz Yisrael. In a powerful statement, he asserted, “Imagine if the year was 1943 and Mike Tress was standing here, telling us that the Nazis, ym”sh, have agreed to release 20,000 Jews. All we need is $360 per person for their train ticket; wouldn’t everyone ask for the opportunity to save at least two? We are experiencing a spiritual Holocaust, and all it takes to save them is a bus ticket!”

The highlight of the evening was a question and answer session on “Parenting and Chinuch,” with Harav Aharon Feldman, shlita, Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Ner Yisroel and Harav Shmuel Kamenetsky, shlita, Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshiva of Philadelphia, moderated by Rabbi Michoel Berkowitz.

In response to one question, “What does one do if his child does not want to go to school?” both Roshei Yeshivah insisted that the beginning to the solution of this problem begins long before, as the parents must give the child the proper chashivus for going to yeshivah and learning Torah.  In response to another question on how to motivate one’s child to feel a geshmak in Yiddishkeit when one does not feel it himself, Harav Kamenetsky insisted that first and foremost, the parent must be the example, and therefore, one must go back to his own Rebbe, and figure out how to get that geshmak himself.

The evening’s guest speaker was Rabbi Daniel Osher Kleinman, Rav of Congregation Nachlas Dovid in Flatbush. In a riveting address, Rabbi Kleinman asserted that a main element of chinuch is to instill in a child the sense that his parent has respect for him and believe in his abilities.  This was the tool that Yaakov Avinu used, when giving the brachos to the Shevatim. “So that in the dark days of Galus, a Yid has the understanding of his tremendous abilities, and this is one of the secrets of overcoming our nisyonos. In my opinion, this is an important yesod of chinuch. Parents must express their belief in and respect for the child, and this will encourage the children.”

The program ended with a video depicting the wonderful work of Chinuch Atzmai, particularly in the Ramle school. As Dr. Michael Elman, a respected Baltimore askan, asserted after witnessing the amazing accomplishments of Sharei Tzion, “We are building a Jewish country, one Jewish child after another.” Chaim Glazer, who was also on-site and is actively involved in this initiative, encouraged the entire community to come and experience first-hand the miracles of Chinuch Atzmai.
