Time is running out.

After an outcry from Lakewood residents over Verizon’s failure to maintain their 3G cell network, Verizon has decided to offer 4G flip-phones free of charge to customers eligible for an upgrade.

“The best experience for our customers is on a 4G device,” Verizon Spokesperson David Weissmann told Matzav.com. “In an effort to encourage Lakewood area customers to use a phone that will deliver the experience they expect, for a limited time, customers eligible for an upgrade can get LG Exalt or Kyocera Cadence 4G LTE basic phones for as low as $0/month.”

He listed a number of stores that offer the deal, including stores in Lakewood, Howell, Jackson, Brick, Toms River, and Freehold.

“As demand has grown for our 4G LTE network – the vast majority of customer usage is on LTE – we continue to allocate additional network resources towards it to serve those customers,” Weissmann concluded. “Having less 3G devices on the network allows us to focus our resources on the 4G network.”

Earlier this year, an online petition asking Verizon to continue maintaining their 3G towers around Lakewood garnered over 400 signatures. Additionally, many customers registered official complaints about the carrier’s service in the area.

The deal will be over Dec. 31.
