Baltimore, MD - Dec. 26, 2018 - Tonight, Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at 8:00 pm, the community is invited to an evening of education about vaccines.  The event will take place at Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion, 6600 Park Heights Avenue.  This event is presented by the Vaad HaRabbonim and the community’s Day Schools and Yeshivos; our community health support organizations, Bikur Cholim, Jewish Caring Network and Chai Lifeline; as well as our hospitals, Sinai/Lifebridge, GBMC, University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins.

Vaccination has been a pillar of public health policy for more than a century, with overwhelmingly positive results, and is supported and encouraged by our community’s Rabbonim, schools, and medical providers.  The Baltimore Vaad HaRabbanim recently issued a public statement expressing its view that it is a Halachic responsibility to vaccinate.  This event, as a follow up to that statement, is intended to educate the public about the value of vaccines and to address common concerns and questions.

The event will be addressed by Dr. Paul Offit of The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, who will be addressing a wide range of questions that have been submitted to him regarding vaccine effectiveness and safety.

Dr. Paul Offit is a pediatrician specializing in infectious diseases and an expert on vaccines, immunology, and virology. He is the co-inventor of a rotavirus vaccine, recommended for universal use in infants by the CDC, that has been credited with saving hundreds of lives every day. Dr. Offit is the Maurice R. Hilleman Professor of Vaccinology, professor of Pediatrics at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and the director of the Vaccine Education Center at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He has been a member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.  He is a recipient of many awards, including the J. Edmund Bradley Prize for Excellence in Pediatrics from the University of Maryland Medical School, and a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health.
