What is Batya?

Batya is a network for high school girls from secular or traditional homes who want to increase their relationship with their Jewish Heritage. They offer many program styles: study buddy learning, project-based learning, Shabbatyas, trips, community service projects and volunteer work.  There are Batya girls who bake challah every week to deliver to patients in the hospital and create packages for sick children and elderly people.

More than anything Batya is a non-judgmental environment where girls with different backgrounds and different personalities can explore the wonder within themselves and strengthen their relationship with Judaism, forging strong friendships and gaining a support network that will be there with them for life!

Where is Batya based?

There is a vibrant weekly Batya program in Baltimore run in conjunction with J.E.P. of Maryland, with Shabbatons and events throughout the year.  Weekly programs are held throughout NY, NJ and PA as well.

Batya started in Central Jersey, which is where the main office and the “Batya house” are located.   The Batya house hosts girls, alumni and their families for Shabbos on a regular basis, as well as many events and Shabbatons.

The Baltimore branch just had their own incredible ShabBatya at the Batya House recently, giving the girls a fantastic experience a powerful connection to the larger national network!

Throughout the year, Batya hosts events and trips which bring everyone together. A major highlight is the Interbranch ShabBatya Retreat in a picturesque hotel in North Jersey, which attracts hundreds of girls and alumni from all over.

What is Pick Purple?

The Pick Purple Clothing Drive is a project of Batya, collecting clothing and shoes in wearable condition and putting them to good use. It’s never been easier to send your old clothing to second owners – Pick Purple stops by your home and picks it up from your doorstep.  All proceeds directly benefit Batya, helping teens find a safe and friendly environment, a place to love, and a place to grow.

Giving back to the community is a key theme of Batya. Through their volunteer A.C.T.I.O.N programs, Batya girls reach out to others and discover the joy of giving.   In keeping with the Batya mission, Pick Purple utilizes resources to benefit others. It discovers potential, makes the most of what we have, and assists people in need.
