Demonstrators ruffled feathers at the Health Department’s headquarters Tuesday in a dramatic protest of an Orthodox Jewish ritual that involves slaughtering chickens in the street.

Some 30 protesters caused a ruckus in the lobby of the Health Department’s office in Long Island City, Queens — imploring the city to ban the ancient practice known as Kaporos.

Roughly 50,000 chickens are killed in Brooklyn neighborhoods in the annual public sacrifice meant to transfer a person’s sins to the doomed birds.

Health Department Commissioner Dr. Mary Bassett “knows that contaminating the streets with blood and body parts of thousands of dead animals is not only illegal but also violates public health code,” said protest organizer Donny Moss, 46.

The demonstrators, after showing up about 9 a.m., dropped to the floor and lay face-up.
