Important Notice:

Every year on Purim day there is a group of people, usually consisting of a man, a woman and a child, who stand in parking lots of where our comunity memebers and even in the circle between the dorms of Ner Yisroel begging passers-by for money. They approach with “Happy Purim” and some story of hospitalization and surgery, and least one of them has some proof of injury, such as a cast on the arm or a walker.

This is a scam!!

Not only are they faking their situation; they are NOT JEWISH. They are con-people who dress as Yidden and take advantage of the fact that Yidden are Rachmanim and Gomlei Chasadim and that on Purim – “kol haposhet yad litol – nosnim lo”.

If you want proof of this, ask them to recite the first posuk of Shema Yisroel (or because they know we are on to them by now and they perhaps have practiced that, try something else). They will not know what you’re talking about and will continue to badger you for money. In the past, I have warned a few bochurim of the hoax within the scammers’ earshot, after performing the test. A few minutes later I watched as they packed out and were gone, the woman previously with the walker now walking normally.

Chazal say that on Purim, “kol haposhet yad litol – nosnim lo”. This chiyuv does not apply to non-Jews. This is because the community and the Yeshiva is not a mokom shenahagu to give money to Non-Jews. Moreover, since they are trying to take money by deception, the reason of “Darkei Sholom” does not apply. If a person does give them money, not only was he was not mekayeim the mitzvah of Matanos L’evyonim, but he may be Gozel Aniyim because otherwise he would give his money to a Yid. (Hilchos Megillah 694:3, Se’if katan 10-11).

Chazal say that to be “matzil mamon Yisroel” is a mitzvah of Hashovas Aveidah. Consequently, I advise that you

Do Not Give Money To These People!!

A Freilichen Purim to y’all,

Note: This has the endorsement of one of the chashuvei hahanhala of Ner Yisroel who wishes to remain anonymous and who added that Mipnei Darchei Sholom it is permitted to give them 5 cents or less.
