Rabbi Adam Scheier, Rabbi of the largest Orthodox Jewish Community in North America, close ally of Canadian Premier Justin Trudeau and one of the senior rabbis included in the “blacklist” of rabbis today attended yesterday (Monday) the Knesset and took part in the Immigrant and Absorption Committee meeting regarding the discussions on the delay of publication of the criteria for recognizing Diaspora rabbis.

Rabbi Scheier, also known as the rabbi e of the late singer, Leonard Cohen, arrived in Israel for one day to take part in the discussion. During the discussion Rabbi Scheier addressed Moshe Dagan, Director of the Chief Rabbinate saying that, “Each year, at the very end of Yom Kippur – when everyone is hungry and eager to break their fasts, and filled with energy havening successfully made it through the long hours of prayer – the 2000 people sitting in our pews stand in united and sing Hatikva (…) how powerful it is to utilize our most spiritually-charged moment of the year to express our love for Israel. We love Israel because we believe in the depths of our souls that Israel is a Kiddush Hashem (…) It is therefore so painful to observe that the recent actions of the Israeli Chief Rabbinate are causing Chilul Hashem".

Rabbi Scheier described how he receives many requests from young couples in his community to marry them in a ceremony in Israel, and how he is forced to tell them that he is unsure whether the Israeli Rabbinate will permit him to officiate.  Essentially, Rabbi Scheier argued, that the rabbinate is undermining his authority. “Don’t these rabbis, doesn’t the State of Israel feel a sense of responsibility to our community? We feel so close to them – do they care about us? How can they treat rabbis in such a way? “I have no answer. I have wondered about that same question many times. Why do they treat Diaspora Rabbis – why have they treated me – with such distrust?”.

Rabbi Seth Farber, whose organization ITIM originally exposed the rabbinical blacklist and initiated the discussion in the Knesset said that “The rabbinate’s actions have widened the gulf between Israel and diaspora communities.  Rabbis in the diaspora are on the frontlines supporting Israel and providing Jewish services. Instead of supporting these rabbis, the rabbinate chooses to delegitimize them.”

At the hearing, Farber presented statistics that demonstrated that almost one in every four letters presented to the rabbinate are rejected.  “In 2016, 627 families were told that their Jewish bona fides were simply not good enough.  This is an outrage.”  Farber’s ITIM organization handles more than a thousand cases each year of people trying to prove their Jewishness. ITIM acquired the blacklist in 2017 after a protracted legal battle with the rabbinate. “It is time for the Rabbinate to come to its senses and put an end to this travesty.  The rabbinate must be transparent for the sake of Israel, and for the sake of the Jewish people. "

Scheier added that his inclusion on the ‘blacklist’ has deeply offended him and the Jewish community. “It was only a few weeks ago that a local rabbi in my city told a member of my community that they should not invite me to officiate at their children’s wedding. His reason? Because I am not accepted by the State of Israel’s Chief Rabbinate (...) The Rabbinate has eroded my own community’s trust in my reliability. This must end. The bureaucracy and exclusionary practices do not meet basic standards of decency and professionalism. This is not a matter of religious standards; this is a matter of basic humanity.  If I am not to be trusted, then please share, once and for all, why not. Please let me, my colleagues, and our communities know what, in eyes of the Israel Chief Rabbinate – and therefore in the eyes of the State of Israel – what makes a rabbi “kosher,” he concluded.

Also taking part in the discussion were Rabbi Shlomo Riskin, the Rabbi of Efrat; Rabbi Dr. Seth Farber, Director of ITIM; Adv. Elad Kaplan, Director of Public Policy at ITIM; Committee Director, MK Avraham Neguise (Likud); Leader of the Opposition, MK Isaac (Bougie) Herzog (Zionist Union); MK Elazar Stern (Yesh Atid), MK Rachel Azaria (Kulanu); and MK Yoel Razvozov (Yesh Atid).
