Jerusalem, Israel - Feb. 5, 2018 - Wine and Eretz Yisrael have a long history. Viticulture was mentioned in biblical times, with wine one of the seven species of Eretz Yisrael.  The modern Israeli wine industry was initiated by Baron Edmond James de Rothschild, in Rishon Lezion and Zikron Ya'akov.

Today hundreds of Israeli wineries are producing an increasing variety of kosher, and non-kosher wines. Long gone are the days of having options of only red, sweet, heavy kiddush wine.

Four Israeli regions of wine production were the focus of a special event in Jerusalem on Tu Bishvat at the OU Israel Center. A full-house crowd gathered for a wine tasting and informational event sponsored by Regavim.

Regavim is a research-based think-tank and lobbying organization with a mission to protect Israel’s resources and encourage the government to exercise its sovereignty throughout the Land of Israel. Regavim works to create legislation to protect Jewish settlements, monitor and report Arab construction on Jewish-owned property and illegal garbage dumps in Judea and Samaria.

Regavim event organizer Naomi Kahn told BJL,“Tonight, as you enjoy the wonderful tastes of Israel’s fine wines, you’ll also get a taste of what Regavim does in each of the four regions of Israel. We hope you will learn something new about the Israeli wine industry’s unique qualities, and come away with a new appreciation of the challenges we face and the steps we at Regavim are taking to protect the Land of Israel so that we can all continue to enjoy the fruits of our Homeland.”

Information of the four growing regions was provided by Eli Poch. Poch, who established the Jerusalem Wine Club, has long been interested in wine, going back to his youth in Canada. His wine store is located in Gush Etziion, in the Kibbutz Kfar Etzion Commercial Center. Poch's explanations and enthusiasm added to the attendees appreciation for the four quality Israeli wines served to participants.
