NEW YORK – The Board of the Orthodox Union (OU), the nation’s oldest and largest umbrella organization for the North American Orthodox Jewish community, has voted to reaffirm and implement guidelines for its member synagogues adopted last February. These guidelines, based on the Responses of the Rabbinic Panel consulted by the OU, and adopted by its Synagogue Standards Commission and Board of Directors, highlight the important role women play in Torah education, pastoral counseling and guidance, and other critical functions within the professional ranks of the synagogue, while precluding, based on halachic considerations, women holding rabbinic clergy positions.

All OU synagogues (with the limited exception, outlined below, of a very small number currently employing female clergy) will be expected to adhere to the OU standards adopted in February 2017 as a condition of membership. Likewise, any synagogue seeking to join the network going forward will be expected to follow these guidelines.

Of the hundreds of synagogues affiliated with the OU, a very small number currently employ women in clergy positions, and did so well before the adoption of the OU’s guidelines last year. With respect to these synagogues only, and after full consultation with its Rabbinic Panel, the OU Board determined to continue its dialogue with these synagogues in the hopes that such continued dialogue can bring these synagogues fully within the parameters of the Rabbinic Responses. The Board will evaluate the results of these efforts in three years. At least two synagogues have already expressed their desire to engage (or continue to engage) in such discussions.
