Mahwah, NJ - A New Jersey town has approved a settlement with a New York Orthodox Jewish group that sued them over a dispute over an eruv built last year.

Mahwah Township Attorney Brian Chewcaskie says the settlement will remain confidential pending approval from the Bergen Rockland Eruv Association. The Record reports council members voted 5-2 late Tuesday in favor of settling after two hours of private legal discussion.

Council members Janet Ariemma and James Wysocki voted no.

The lawsuit was sparked by a now-reversed township amendment that would have effectively banned the building of an eruv, a religious boundary created by placing white plastic piping on utility poles, in local parks.

The lawsuit alleged the ban was an attempt to keep Orthodox Jews from New York out of Mahwah.
