Baltimore, MD - December 26, 2017:

Dear Friends:

We are pleased to announce plans for our 2018/ 5778 event to benefit Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion Congregation. This special evening will be held, G-d willing, on Motzei Shabbos, Saturday evening, January 6, 2018, at 8:00pm at our Shul.  The evening will include a special tribute to our esteemed honorees:

Chaim and Lisa Schecter

Doni and Chaya Greenwald

Binyamin, Yakira, Yehuda and Penina Green, Youth Award

Chaim and Lisa Schecter have been extraordinarily dedicated to the Shul for many years.  They are both people who recognize a need and just step up to address it.  Since joining Bnai Jacob, Chaim has filled many of the shul’s critical positions, serving as its Baal Koreh, Gabbai Rishon, Gabbai Sheini, Baal Tfiloh for Yamim Noraim, and a member of the board.  Chaim is also instrumental, with no fanfare, in transforming the shul for the Yamin Noraim.  And, for years, Chaim was one of the key persons responsible for all aspects of the shul’s upkeep and maintenance.  For many years, Lisa was a beloved teacher and then the dedicated and dynamic General Studies Supervisor at Bais Yaakov School for Girls.  In these roles, she was able to direct and nurture the early education of thousands of students and actively help parents navigate the needs of their daughters.  Lisa showed us the lengths to which a great educator will go to help and enable her students to learn. Lisa has also been an active and efficient volunteer in our shul and other community organizations, including being the go-to person for countless shul events.  In addition, Lisa serves as a source of quiet Chesed to numerous individuals and families in our shul community.

Doni and Chaya Greenwald have been involved in countless aspects of shul life.  Doni, as shul president for the past two years, has led Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion as it has continued to play a central role in the Baltimore community.  Doni, with his warm personality, cheerful disposition and boundless energy, is one of our shul’s strongest champions and ambassadors. Doni spearheaded last year’s monumental 24-hour online campaign which was one of our Shul’s most significant and essential fundraisers.  Additionally, Doni has facilitated several other initiatives to bolster the shul’s finances.  Not to be outdone, Chaya has expended an enormous amount of time and energy orchestrating, coordinating and planning many shul events.  In addition to Chaya’s unyielding dedication to the shul, she is one of the most treasured volunteers of the Jewish Caring Network. Chaya devotes hours each day to ensure that each JCN family member receives a birthday gift, anniversary gift, a special gift while in the hospital, or perhaps, a “we’re thinking of you” gift during recovery.  She personally picks out each gift with love, wraps it, and then, if that wasn’t enough, delivers the gift on the family member’s birthday, anniversary or during their hospital stay. She truly enhances over 500 lives each year. She is truly a remarkable, caring, compassionate woman.  As a team, Doni and Chaya have devoted their minds and hearts to enhancing our shul’s warmth and achdus.

We are delighted to be recognizing Binyamin, Yakira, Yehuda and Penina Green at our annual event this year with an award in recognition of their consistent volunteer work at the shul.  Year after year, they have worked closely with their father in chairing the lulav and esrog sale and the matzoh sale.  Binyamin, Yakira, Yehuda and Penina have clearly assumed the strong family tradition of Ahavas Yisrael and communal commitment that are hallmarks of their family.  Sometimes the apple falls far from the tree, but in the case of the Green children, the apples magnificently reflect the tree: a family which represents quiet nobility, kindness and dedication to community.

This year, the fun highlight of the program is going to be an exciting show by the very original Mentalist and Magician, Marc Garfinkel. Marc has an excellent reputation and puts on a great show.

In addition to what we believe will be an inspiring event, we will commemorate this special evening with an Ad Journal dedicated to our honorees.  This event is critical to the success of our Shul.  It will ensure that we can continue to meet the needs of our members and our community.

To make reservations and/or to place an ad, you can go to our website www.bjsz.org or email us at office@bjsz.org. You may also call the shul at 410-764-6810.

We look forward to greeting you in person at the banquet on January 6, 2018.

Please feel free to call any of us with any questions you may have.

Best regards,

Rabbi Moshe and Mindi Hauer
