Jerusalem, Israel - July 10, 2017 - The 20th Maccabiah, has brought together 10,000 athletes, from around the world. Running various sports in locations all over Israel, from July 4 - 17th, and Maccabiah is often called the "Jewish Olympics."

On Monday, international Maccabiah leaders and a representation of athletes were hosted at Beit Hanasi by Israeli President Reuven and Nechama Rivlin. President Rivlin mentioned his being a 7th generation resident of Jerusalem and how sports should bring people together in his remarks.

International President of World Maccabiah Dan Bansky responded saying he was 5th generation in Finland, but that his great-grandfather also came from Vilna and they could be cousins. Banksy spoke of how happy he was to be in Jerusalem, "the eternal undivided capitol of Israel" and special to pray at the Kotel for recovery of his wife who could not travel with him at this time. 

Jason Lezack, a 4-time swimming gold medalist for the USA, spoke on behalf of the athletes on the significance of the Maccabiah on his life.


Representatives of new countries participating were honored to attend. 

Bansky concluded his remarks, "Am Yisrael Chai, Chazak U'Matz." The concluding ceremony will be held in Latrun on July 17, 2017.

Among the official and athletes included in the photo essay are David Hochberg, Avi Ellman, Mordechai Tichauer, Roy Salomon, Canada; Pierre Cohen-Aknine,of South Korea, squash player; Noel Cedanio, Puerto Rico, swimming; Paul Altman, Barbados, golf; and Yigal Kopinsky, Suriname, Judo.
