It seems that a number of people have not heard of the following Mishna Brurah, so as a public service – this article is being posted.

There are two types of mezonos and breads. There is general mezonos and there is pas yisroel mezonos. General mezonos is also known as pas palter.

The Mishna Brurah writes (242:6) that on account of the Mitzvah of Kavod Shabbos and Yom Tov it is proper to be careful not to eat general mezonos on these days – even for those who regularly eat general mezonos during the weekdays. Rather one should try only to eat Pas Yisroel Mezonos and breads. In the shaar haTziyun, the Chofetz Chaim writes that it not only refers to the main Challah, but even to items within the meal.

He references the Mogain Avrohom, the Chayei Adam, and other Achronim. It is interesting to note that the Eliyahu Rabbah (OC 242: 10, see also Elyah Zuta 8) disagrees and writes that although it is admirable to eat only Pas Yisroel on Shabbos it is not a halacha – it is different than during Aseres Yemei Teshuvah. It seems that the Eliyahu Rabbah understands the Mogain Avrohom as learning that it is more significant than he sees it.

Entenman’s (see illustrative photo) is not Cholov Yisroel. It was chosen because some who do not keep Cholov Yisroel still use Entemnman’s on Shabbos – a problem according to this Mishna Brurah.

If someone is a diabetic, however, and there is no other dietetic type of Mezonos other than General Mezonos – then it seems that it would be equivalent to the no other option that the Mishna Brurah mentions and it would be permitted.
