The 14th annual two-day Jerusalem Conference, sponsored by BeSheva, the Israeli religious-Zionist weekly news organization, started on Monday morning, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Dudu Seda, BeSheva Group executive officer, introduced President Reuven Rivlin as the opening speaker.
President Rivlin spoke of returning and building Eretz Yisrael. "We need a way to keep Eretz Yisrael Jewish and democratic, according to law," emphasized the Israeli President. One united Eretz Yisrael, not Gush Dan, and sections, but "Zion Shelanu" with citizenship to all who live on the land. Rivlin spoke of his memories from years ago on Har Shmuel, and then was handed by his assistant an Arabic deed for over 50 dunams of land under Rivlin's name and ownership in Ramallah.
The President was followed immediately by Rishon Letzion HaRav Yitzhak Yosef, the Israeli chief Sefardi Rabbi. Giving words of bracha and torah to start the conference, Rav Yosef mention the 12 tribes, saying each had their own individual approach, but together made up Klal Yisrael.
The first panel in the Conference dealt with Jerusalem, "after 50 years, is Jerusalem is truly united." Participants included Moshe Lion, Yehudit Oppenheimer, Yussi Yonah, Caroline Glick, Rafi Yisraeli, and Aryeh King.
Over two days the Jerusalem Conference will award eleven Jerusalem Prizes to various organizations and individuals. The first this year was awarded to the Menachem Begin Heritage Center by President Rivlin. Among others to receive prizes are United Hatzalah, Givat Washington Educational Center, and Ezer Mizion.
