Reposted from 2016 - Jerusalem, Israel - July 10, 2016 - The official Israeli ceremony remembering the daring IDF rescue of kidnapped Jews from Uganda on July 4, 1976, 5 Tammuz, was held at the Jerusalem Theater on Sunday evening. 

Songs, video clips and speeches, blended old and new, bringing back memories and tears, and smiles. The successful rescue of Jewish passengers of the Air France flight hijacked in route from Tel Aviv to Paris was a giant moment in Israel's history.

The hijackers had the plane land in an airport in Uganda. Their list of demands included the release of dozens of prisoners from Israel, Germany and France, plus 5 million dollars from France, One of Israel's most daring operations brought back most of the passengers safely. 

After several days on the ground in the airport, Shabbat started. The group assembled. One woman lit candles. There was one small bottle of duty-free for kiddush. Sara Davidson spoke on behalf of the survivors and presented former President Shimon Peres with flowers and thanks for his part in their rescue.

The theater was filled with family members of the hijacked plane survivors. Also, a large number of government officials and ministers attended, including. Yitzhak Herzog, Yuli Edelstein, Avigdor Lieberman, Miri Regev, MKs Anat Berko and Shuli Mualem, Police chief Roni Alsheikh, and IDF chief Gadi Eisenkot,

Chief Army Chazan Shai Abramson sang one song of several songs, while the IDF choir ended the program with a song and Hatikvah.
