Baltimore, MD - Jan. 9, 2023 - Today, 16 Teves, 5783, we commemorate the 2oth yahrzeit of Suburban’s second Rav, Rabbi Ervin Preis, HaRav Shlomo Aryeh ben Moshe z’l. After receiving semicha from Rav Joseph Soloveitchik z’l at Yeshiva University, Rabbi Preis served as an Army Chaplain.
In June 1976, following his first pulpit in New London, CT, Rabbi Preis succeeded Suburban’s then Rabbi Emeritus Chaim Gevantman, z’l, moving to Baltimore with his Rebbetzin, Anita, and three young children. Rabbi Preis shepherded the shul through an era of marked transformation, resulting in an influx of many new young members and a more observant kehilla. Rabbi Preis displayed an unstinting dedication to his pastoral duties, often cutting trips short to return to Baltimore to comfort those in mourning.
Rabbi Preis displayed a sophisticated understanding of the Torah, delivering learned sermons and classes (in his mild British accent, acquired from spending his early childhood in England). He was acknowledged by his peers in the community as a scholar and leader in Orthodoxy. For 12 years, until his passing, Rabbi Preis served as leader of the The Rabbinical Council of Greater Baltimore (Vaad Harabonim). He was among the first Orthodox Rabbis to take a general Jewish community leadership position in his role with Jewish Family Services.
Sadly, Rabbi Preis passed away prematurely at age 67. During most of his 3-year illness, Rabbi Preis amazingly continued his Rabbinic duties. One week before his passing, Rabbi Preis was brought to shul in a wheelchair for Shabbos mincha and gave a dvar Torah at shalosh seudos. His quiet way and humility was trademark in his communal leadership. It was only after his passing that the congregation, as well as the community, become fully aware of Rabbi Preis’ countless acts of chessed and impact on Klal Yisrael.
