Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day is observed this year starting Wednesday evening, April 27, 2022, through Thursday, April 28, 2022. The official Israel State Opening Ceremony for Holocaust Remembrance Day took place on Wednesday, at 20:00, in Warsaw Ghetto Square, Yad Vashem, on the Mount of Remembrance in Jerusalem. 

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and Prime Minister Naftali Bennett delivered remarks at the Opening Ceremony. Chairman of the Yad Vashem Council Rabbi Israel Meir Lau lit the Memorial Torch as he has done in past years. Moshe Meron was selected to speak on behalf of the survivors. This year, a Holocaust survivor, Beni Harel was chosen to recite El Maleh Rahamim prayer for the souls of the martyrs.

A special guest this year was the President of the Bundestag Bärbel Bas who attended toured Yad Vashem earlier in the day and Knesset Shoah commemorative programs.

During the ceremony, Holocaust survivors lit six torches. First torch: Zvi Gill; second torch: Shmuel Blumenfeld z"l (the torch was lit by his son Aryeh); third torch: Olga Kay; fourth torch: Arie Shilansky; fifth torch: Shaul Spielmann; sixth torch: Rebecca Elizur. During the ceremony, short videos on each of the torch lighters survial story are shown. Produced and directed by Shira Felix, these videos are available on the Yad Vashem website in the section dedicated to Holocaust Remembrance Day 2022. Each year those personal testimonies are powerful and emotional stories of survival. 

Israeli singer Ron Buchnik, as well as the IDF Paratroopers’ Honor Guard, participated in the ceremony. The MC for the ceremony was Danny Cushmaro.

The annual ceremony features a traditional memorial service, including the recitation of a perek Tehilim by Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi David Lau. The Rishon LeZion, Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef recited the Kaddish. A mincha minyan took place in the outer plaza before the ceremony, after passing levels of security checks. 

Former President Reuven Rivlin and former Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat were in attendance, as was Oppostion Leader Benjamin Netanyahu, and former US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman and Tammy Friedman.  Rabbi Mark Dratch was with leaders of the  International Jewish Committee for Intereligous Consulations, who were among the hundreds of international guests seated in the outdoor plaza on an unually warm evening for the annual official state event. Drawing attention this year was Prime Minister Bennettt's family.
