Jerusalem, Israel - Dec. 23, 2021  - With winter weather in Yerushalayim, the sky has been grey with clouds and the ground wet from pouring rain. However, briefly, on Thursday, Erev Shabbos the sun broke thru white clouds.

BJL went to see the situation in the Old City on what should have been a very busy tourist day. With borders shut and flights canceled at the last minute, this season has not been a happy one.

At Jaffa Gate, the plaza was filled with more birds than people. On the streets in the Jewish Quarter this time of year it could be hard to get thru the crowds, today it was easy to photograph them with only one person. By the Hurva Synagogue, also the tour groups were noticeably missing.

However, the views from the Aish roof were impressive. The clouds broke long enough for some blue sky to peek thru. Workers could be seen on the dome of the Tiferet Israel Synagogue, the largest synagogue destroyed by the Jordanians and the last to be restored. It rises over the Rova, higher than the Hurva Synagogue.

At the Kossel, bar mitzvahs were celebrated with music. Masks were required only inside.

Near the Yeshiva Porat Yosef, work on the elevator from the Jewish Quarter to the Kossel Plaza was visible. Visitors will find the area more accessible, not having to climb so many stairs.

Zion Gate and the Armenian Way did not have those lines of traffic as most holidays. Less dangerous to walk, but also a bit sad to see so few people.

But even with so many shops closed, there was work on a new kosher pizza store near Jaffa Gate in the Old City, an area that did not have kosher food in the past.
