Stamford, CT – Nov. 9, 2021 - On Shabbos Parshas Toldos 5782, Nov. 5, an incredibly unique event occurred at the Armon Hotel in Stamford, CT, as several hundred kidney donors and their families gathered for a reunion event hosted by Renewal. As many in the Baltimore community know, Renewal is the groundbreaking organization that facilitates kidney transplants for those in need across the greater Jewish community. To date, Renewal has facilitated over 800 kidney transplants, the vast majority altruistic donations in which the donor does not even know the recipient's identity in advance.

The lavish Shabbos was to honor and pay tribute to these selfless individuals and their families. Also in attendance were numerous friends of Renewal who participated in their Crowdfunding event earlier this year. Besides serving as a reunion, everyone enjoyed a sumptuous Shabbos menu and benefited from extensive programming and entertainment.

Joining the crowd for the entire Shabbos were two of the leading Chazzanim of the generation, namely Yitzchak Meir (Itchemayer) Helfgott and Shulem Lemmer. The Chazzanim were accompanied during Shabbos by the Yedidim Choir. After the uplifting Shabbos, complete with singing and exciting programming, ended, a gala Melava Malka took place.

Many attendees from around the greater New York area participated in the Melava Malka. Besides the sumptuous meal, the crowd was regaled by an incredible musical program, including the Chazanim mentioned above, as well as some of the top performers in Chasidic music today, including Benny Friedman, Lipa Schmeltzer, and others who brought the house down.

One incredibly poignant moment during the Melava Malka programming came when the Chairman and Founder of Renewal, Mendy Reiner, took to the stage to introduce a unique family that happens to hail from Baltimore, MD.

First, Reiner called up Aryeh Leib Freedman to recognize his kidney donation to a stranger in July of 2019. Next, he called on Aryeh Leib's brother, Rabbi Mayer Freedman of New Jersey, who donated a kidney in December 2019. Reiner then proceeded to call up Mr. Shmuel Freedman of Inwood, NY, brother number three, who donated a kidney in May of this year.

After all three brothers were on stage, Reiner also called on a fourth brother, Rabbi Paysach Freedman (a future kidney donor), who surprised the family by flying in from Eretz Yisrael for this event.

The icing on the cake was when Reiner asked Mrs. Zipporah Freedman, mother of these selfless kidney donors, to come on stage for special recognition. Besides the altruistic donations of their kidneys, the Freedmans have also been instrumental in raising awareness of the need for kidney donations in each of their respective communities.

Mrs. Freedman was deeply moved by this public tribute to her sons who had jointly decided to donate kidneys to strangers in memory of their beloved father, Rabbi Mendel D. Freedman, Z'L, longtime principal of Bais Yaakov of Baltimore. Rabbi Freedman himself had received a lifesaving heart transplant in 2008, and after his passing, his sons decided to perform this unique mitzvah in his memory.
