Jerusalem, Israel - Oct. 30, 2021 - Close to 20,000 runners participated in the events of the Jerusalem Winner Marathon on Friday morning, October 29, 2021. Participants had a choice of six different events: full marathon, half marathon, 10km race, 5km race, family race – 1.7km, and a special social race of 800 meters.

There are two finish lines and multiple events in Sacher Park and the route around Jerusalem and into the Old City.

Twenty-nine-year-old Israeli Yamar Gethon, took and kept a commanding lead in the full marathon to finish in the first place, setting a record time of  2:24:07. The first woman to cross the finish line of the full marathon was Anna Preis, 45 years old, with a recorded time of 3:25:50.  The two winners received a prize of 3,750 U.S. dollars each.

In the half-marathon race, Beatie Deutsch finished in the first place, with a record time of 1:20:40. She is the Orthodox Israeli marathon athlete who is married with 5 children and will not participate in events held on Shabbat. "Beatie" has become an inspiration to a large following of fans, and has inspired young women to participate in running, showing by example, always dressed modestly.

The Jerusalem International Marathon scheduled for March 20, 2020, was canceled due to the pandemic situation. Friday's event had few international participants, mostly those in Israel with foreign passports.

The Jerusalem Marathon has grown over the past decade to become a big fundraiser for dozens of non-profit organizations and tzedakah groups. This year many of those groups were not able to organize for this event as in the past but plan to be back in March 2022 for the next international Jerusalem Marathon.

Shalva, The Base, The Lone Soldier Center, and a group in memory of Ari Fuld z"l were among the groups represented in the tents in Sacher Park. However, one relatively new organization had the largest group running this year, with close to 500 volunteers - Just One Chesed.

Jerry Latinik launched Just One Chesed after a period of financial difficulty. Founded in 2016, according to their mission statement, to provide a communal platform where those in need can get the assistance they require, while those who are able to lend their time, talents, and resources can find meaningful opportunities to make a lasting change. A network connecting organizations and people with existing worldwide resources, through an online platform and interpersonal connections, creating a one-stop-shop for anything chesed related.

Over 250 organizations in the United States and Israel have made their services available to those in need through Just One Chesed.

Beatie Deutsch ran to support Just One Chesed and spoke to 200 young women prior to the Friday marathon.

Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion, Jerusalem Deputy Mayors Arye King, and Fleur Hasson Nahoum participated in the 10 K race.

The day started out pleasantly cool, but by mid-morning, the temperature had risen enough that some runners needed medical attention, along the route and in Sacher Park.

By noon people were heading home to prepare for Shabbat. The Jerusalem Marathon was back, down in numbers attending, but not enthusiasm, people were happy to be out again and see friends, after the past difficult year and a half. Plus it was the last Friday before the clocks change. Shabbat begins at 4:11 pm next week.

The Jerusalem Winner Marathon is run by the Jerusalem Municipality, in cooperation with the Jerusalem Development Authority and with the support and assistance of the Ministry of Jerusalem and Heritage, the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture and Sports, and under the initial sponsorship of the Toto Winner.
