Dearest Ainsworth and Fellig Families,

I cannot remember the year, although I certainly remember it was the summer time.

The image of your parents driving unto the Crown Hotel driveway with the station wagon loaded to the gills is etched forever in my mind. Your father, A’H, was the fiercest negotiator I ever met. He booked several rooms on the spot for several weeks at a price that probably was the lowest rate I ever gave anyone. Why?

Perhaps it was because the Fellig kids looked so tired and cranky. But, of course, they were so cute!

Fast forward to 1980.

What you see below is from Miami Dade County’s Property web site. Yep! Your parents purchased my home for $120,000 in 1980.

Itty and Tzvi looked at my house no more than 2 times. Can you imagine buying a home faster than some people buy a bottle of water.

Of course they needed to ask the Rebbe for guidance to buy our home. The Rebbe said yes. We quickly agreed on the price. Tzvi then said he had a problem. He had only $90,000 of the $120,000. Would I agree to accept a promissory note of $30,000 to be paid $10,000 every 9 months?  I responded: “of course”.

The $30,000 note would be documented utilizing a Heter Iska. Tzvi then said: “hold on. We must ask the Rebbe.” The next day, Tzvi came back to me. The Rebbe said no interest even with the Heter Iska. I looked at Tzvi and said: If the Rebbe said no interest, then that’s the way it will be.

We got along so well that we even shared a MB frum attorney to represent both of us in the transaction. The transaction was one of the, if not the, smoothest and hassle-free transactions I ever was part of. Your dear parents were upstanding Yiddin who will be sorely missed by everyone who had the distinct pleasure of being associated with them.

What can one say to you, the family whose world is now broken, that will bring you comfort? I say, relive your beautiful memories, hold on to them, remember your parents who were such wonderful people. They left their mark on this world and will not be forgotten. They left a glorious legacy of children, grandchildren and siblings.

הַמָּקוֹם יְנַחֵם אֶתְכֶם בְּתוֹךְ שְׁאָר אֲבֵלֵי צִיּוֹן וִירוּשָׁלַיִם

All the best,
