Head of Conference of European Rabbis issues rare call for control over houses of worship after Vienna attack

Europe's rabbis have called for increased governmental "control and transparency" for Muslim and other places of worship, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported Tuesday.

The rare call came in a statement issued by Rabbi Pinchas Goldschmidt, who is the president of the Conference of European Rabbis, in response to Monday's deadly shooting attack in Vienne.

The rabbi asserted the importance of inquiry into the materials being promoted in mosques and other places of worship, as well as into their sources of funding.

Europe must know "what foreign influences are promoting such terrible deeds and how social media serve as a vehicle for this," the rabbi asserted.

He also called for religious leaders to undergo their training and get their certificates domestically, in Europe, and state their adherence to the laws of the lands where they operate. Read more at i24
