German police have arrested a 14-year-old high school student on suspicion of planning an attack on a mosque or synagogue, The Jerusalem Post reports. 

A spokesperson for the Düsseldorf prosecutor's office told the Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA) news agency that the boy, who was not named in German media, allegedly carried out at least one test with explosives in preparation for the attack.

The teenager is accused of attempted incitement to murder and an act of violence constituting a threat to national security, the spokesperson said.

Broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported on Tuesday that the boy had contacted unidentified people on his cell phone to discuss the plans. 

In a WhatsApp correspondence, he spoke of a knife attack or bringing a gun into a Jewish or Muslim place of worship, according to Deutsche Welle. Read more at i24
