New Jersey announced more than one-fourth of people in Lakewood who received coronavirus test results this past Saturday were positive for the illness — nine times above the state average that day — as officials continues to investigate and trumpet concern over outbreaks in Ocean County and its most populous township.

The Garden State on Saturday reported a statewide 3% positivity rate, which measures the percentage of residents who test positive for COVID-19 on one day. Officials said it was the first time the state had 3% of tests come back positive in one day since July 17.

Ocean County’s rate that day was 5.44%, driven largely by the surge in cases in Lakewood, the county’s largest municipality and the state’s fastest-growing, with more than 100,000 residents. Lakewood’s rate that day was 27% — nine times higher than the statewide mark.

Ocean County has recorded the most new cases in New Jersey for 15 consecutive days and accounted for 26% of the state’s total new cases in each of the last three days.

Gov. Phil Murphy said the county is “our main focus right now.”
