Jerusalem, Israel - Sept. 8, 2020 - On August 11, the winners of the 2020 Israel Council on Foreign Relations/Konrad Adenauer Stiftung-Israel Essay Contest on "COVID-19: Exploration of Potential Systemic Changes to the Global Order" were announced.
From dozens of entries the top three prize winners were:
1st Place: Moshe Kwiat for his essay "Pandemics, Grey Zone Warfare, and (Inter)National Security"
2nd Place: Rachel Gould and M. Kate Gallagher for their essay "We Can Do Better: Opportunities to Adopt a New Economic Paradigm Thanks to the COVID-19 Pandemic"
3rd Place: Natan Chernin for his essay "The Threat of the Bio Lone Wolf on National Security: A Covid-19 Perspective"
The three winning essays are to be published in the summer issue of The Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs
Under normal conditions, The Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung Israel and The Israel Council on Foreign Relations, which operates under the auspices of the World Jewish Congress, would have hosted an award ceremony in Jerusalem, Israel. Due to the coronavirus limitations., instead, guests were invited to attend the Awards Ceremony virtually by watching on Zoom on Facebook. Participants explained their research results to a live international audience.
The full award program moderated by ICFR Director Laurence Weinbaum was recorded and posted on Facebook on September 8th.
After a few technical problems, and introductory words by ICFR President Dan Meridor, Moshe Kwiat was the first to be introduced to explain his award-winning essay at 10:00 minutes. Click here to watch on Facebook.
"Pandemics, Grey Zone Warfare, and (Inter)National Security" discusses how the coronavirus pandemic has been exploited by nefarious actors to damage national and global security. Together with the effects of the pandemic, democracies worldwide and the international order itself has been challenged. To better deal with future challenges of a similar nature, the paper discusses how strategic preparation can be made on a national and global level."
Former Marylander, Moshe Kwiat is married to Shayna, the daughter of former Baltimorians Alan and Andrea Friedenberg.
