President Rivlin:

“Opening the school year on the 1st of [the Hebrew month of] Elul has great significance. If only the beginning of the school year would also open hearts to mutual responsibility and reaching out to offer each other a helping hand.”

“We must think seriously if we have asked forgiveness of those we have hurt. Because only when that happens is there full repentance. And this year particularly it is right that you, our children, should remind us how important it is not to hurt each other.”

As he does every year, President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin this morning, Friday 21 August / 1 Elul, opened the school year [in the ultra-orthodox sector], this year at Ben Ish Hayil Talmud Torah and Yeshivot in Rehovot as the 5781 school year begins. The president was welcomed by the students and was escorted by Mayor of Rehovot Rahamim Malul, Deputy Minister of Finance Yitzhak Cohen and headteacher of the Talmud Torah Eliyahu Halimi.

The president was greeted by singing children and met sixth grade pupils in their classroom and joined them for a lesson on the month of Elul and how each person prepares for Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, with personal reckoning.

“When I took up this position,” the president said, “and was asked to come to the opening of the school year on the 1st of [the Hebrew month of] Elul, there were those who told me that it would harm our unity. But unity is not uniformity, I said then and I say again today. We are a Jewish and democratic state and religious learning is a cornerstone of our lives here, and so there is nothing more natural for me as President of the State of Israel than to have the honor of also opening the school year at Yeshivot and Talmudei Torah.”

Speaking to the children, the president said, “As a child in Jerusalem, I understood the power of the month of Elul, the power of cheshbon nefesh, personal reckoning, the power of slichot, the penitential prayers. How we have to work until God tells us ‘I have forgiven you according to your words’. But even then, when God forgives us, we must think seriously if we have asked forgiveness of those we have hurt. Because only when that happens is there full repentance. And this year particularly it is right that you, our children, should remind us how important it is not to hurt each other.”

“Not only you are excited at the first day of school,” the president said to the children. “Your parents and teachers are also excited to send you to the first day of school at the Talmud Torah. The beginning of your studies is very important. When you start with your best foot forward, things go well from there. You learn with enthusiasm and interest.”

The president also referred to the current situation, saying “You are beginning your studies when the whole world is dealing with the coronavirus pandemic. Dear children, keep distance according to the instructions, wash and disinfect your hands. When you follow the instructions, you are protecting yourselves and your families. All of us. ‘Take great care of your souls’ (Deuteronomy 4:15)”

Mayor of Rehovot, Rahamim Malul: “I am proud and happy to welcome the president to the education system in Rehovot, amongst the best in Israel, winners of the Education Prize in the past and in the present. The education system in Rehovot makes sure to work in the spirit of Israeli Hope in Education. Here there is no majority and minority, but we work in true partnership and aspire to unity and tolerance. We attach importance both to values and to achievement, ensuring the appropriate adaptations and inclusion of all streams of education and of parental preferences.”
