Dr. Joseph J. Costa, of Mercy Medical Center, has died after becoming ill with the coronavirus, hospital officials announced.

Costa was the chief of the Division of Critical Care at Mercy. He worked as Mercy for 23 years and passed at the age of 56.

"Joe was more than a trusted colleague; he was also a true friend to many. He dedicated his life and career to caring for the sickest patients. And when the global pandemic came down upon us, Joe selflessly continued his work on the front lines -- deeply committed to serving our patients and our City during this time of great need. His memory will live on as an example to us all," said a letter written to staff.

He joined Mercy in 1997 and became Chief of Critical Care in 2005. From 2010 to 2016 he served as an officer of the Mercy Medical Staff, culminating with his two-year tenure as president of the medical staff. Joe was also deeply dedicated to Mercy's mission and values in so many ways, including serving as chairman of the Medical Morals Committee and as a member of the Mercy Health Services Board of Trustees Mission and Corporate Ethics Committee.
