Baltimore, MD - June 10, 2020 - The Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) is a non-profit organization that works with over 200 Jewish schools in 18 states across America, impacting over 45,000 students annually. Our high school program focuses on an engineering capstone team project, which students present at our annual CIJE Innovation Day. This year students from the following local schools participated in our high school program:
- Bais Yaakov of Baltimore High School
- Bnos Yisroel of Baltimore High School
- Melvin J. Berman Hebrew Academy
- Talmudical Academy of Baltimore High School
- Yeshiva of Greater Washington High School Boys Division
- Yeshiva of Greater Washington High School Girls Division
- Yeshivas Toras Chaim
In light of the current situation, it became clear that we could not host our regular in-person event. In the spirit of true innovation, we instead designed a virtual solution. This shift to virtual learning required students to adapt. Yet, despite the challenges, students persevered to submit hundreds of project entries!
This was a challenging year and a great achievement for students to complete engineering projects while they were out of school. It is also a tribute to their dedicated teachers who helped them through this time. We received many strong project entries. However, I would like to give a special recognition to our local winners who were selected for having some of the best projects from across the country!
- Building Belief (Berman Hebrew Academy) by Calanit Epstein, Danielle Soltz, and Dalya Kahn won 2nd place in Assistive Technology.

- The Party Hoodie (Yeshiva of Greater Washington H.S. - Boys) by Akiva Klatzkow, Efrayim Merkin, and Yakov Rhine was selected as one of six finalists to return for our CIJE Tank business competition.

As the CIJE manager for the Maryland schools, I enjoyed working with all the participating Maryland students. It was a great accomplishment for all the students who were able to complete a project, especially during these difficult circumstances. Everyone did a great job and can't wait to see next year's projects!
