JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Police brutality against Chareidim reached new heights Thursday night in Meah Shearim, with a stun grenade thrown near a mother and her 8-year-old daughter. The daughter was injured in her face. A baby in its carriage was also situated next to the mother but it was not hurt.

Police were attempting to enforce public health laws and remove extremists from a local synagogue but at some point after they were attacked with eggs and other items, they decided to throw stun grenades, one of which was thrown at the place where 8-year-old Zisel Margolies was standing. She was injured in the face and taken to Hadassah hospital for treatment, after which she was released with serious burn marks on her face. Miraculously her eyes were not affected.
Health Minister Yaakov Litzman responded to the events, stating that “it is impossible to remain indifferent to the harsh scenes which occurred last night in which a young girl was hurt by a grenade in Meah Shearim. Attacking police is a serious action which is contrary to law and to Halachah and should be roundly condemned. However police ruthlessness, including the use of excessive force and throwing stun grenades in a crowded neighborhood full of small children, must be stopped, as it endangers lives and fosters hatred and loss of public order.
“Police must recognize the character of each community and find the right balance to prevent heated reactions. This was not what happened tonight. Police should speak with communal representatives and with the community itself which is mainly opposed to violence and compliant with regulations.”
Deputy minister Meir Porush said that “no situation warrants the use of stun grenades towards children and endangering of their lives. I call on the police to immediately suspend the policeman and the officer who gave the order to throw a grenade and bring them to trial. Other communities would respond with huge demonstrations. The fact that the Chareidi community is gentle should not allow their blood to be cheapened and their children to be endangered.”
Other public figures also responded angrily to the police brutality, especially in light of the fact that a left-wing demonstration with hundreds of attendees took place in Tel Aviv and police used no violence to scatter the illegal gathering. Jewish Force leader Itamar Ben-Gvir said that “this was criminal negligence on the part of police, violation of all the directives given to police and a terrible result with a young Chareidi girl hurt. The blood of our Chareidi brothers has become worthless and unfortunately everyone is silent. In a democratic country one cannot act one way towards a left-wing demonstration and another way towards a Chareidi prayer group, especially not by throwing a stun grenade in a crowded neighborhood. I demand the immediate firing of the policeman who threw the grenade and that his officers be held accountable.”
Police sources responded by claiming that they had encountered a violent protest including stones, metal objects, eggs and other items thrown at them as well as verbal abuse. The police responded with riot dispersal methods and did not notice the mother and daughter standing nearby. 3 policemen were injured in the riots including one taken to hospital for treatment.
