Jerusalem, Israel - May 2, 2019 -The central state ceremony marking the start of Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Day in Israel was held at Yad Vashem in the Warsaw Ghetto Square on Wednesday night, May 1st. The ceremony was held in the presence of the President of the State of Israel Reuven Rivlin and the Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “The War Within the War – The Jews’ Struggle to Survive the Holocaust” was the theme for this year's commemoration.  During the ceremony, Holocaust survivors lit six torches. First torch: Bela Eizenman; second torch: Shaul Lubovitz; third torch: Fanny Ben-Ami; fourth torch: Menachem Haberman; fifth torch: Sara Shapira; sixth torch: Yehuda Mimon. Also during the ceremony, a short video about each of the torch-lighters was shown. Zipora (Feiga) Granat (née Gershenfish) spoke on behalf of the survivors.

The traditional memorial service, included the recitation of Tehillim by Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi David Lau. The Rishon LeZion, Chief Sephardi Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef recited the Kaddish, and Cantor Yehonatan Heinowitz recited El Maleh Rahamim.

Israeli singers Miri Mesika and Idan Rafael Haviv, as well as the IDF Paratroopers’ Honor Guard, participated in the ceremony, which also included narrative pieces by Israeli actor Tomer Kapon. The MC for the ceremony will be Hila Korach.

Before the program began BJL spoke with the Executive Director of the American Society of  Yad Vashem, Baltimore native Ron Meier. Meier is the son of Holocaust survivors, both of whom were in their early teens growing up in Germany around the time of KristallnachtHis maternal grandparents, for whom he and his sister are named, did not escape, but saved his mother and aunt by getting them on the Kindertransport to England.  Meier has said, “Preserving the memory of all those who perished and fighting on behalf of the Jewish people is in my DNA.” His wife, Joyce Raynor  head of school of the Adelson Educational Campus, was not able to attend.

Hatikvah concluded the program. The Prime Minister, as last year at the conclusion before leaving, went to the honor guard to shake hands with the young soldiers who stood for the almost two hour program.

The usually cold, windy venue was much warmer than last year, even as the hundreds of audience members walked slowly out to waiting shuttle buses, and at least one group stopped to daven maariv.

Yad Vashem continues to call on the public to fill out Pages of Testimony to commemorate the names of Jews murdered during the Holocaust. Volunteers are available to help Holocaust survivors submit Pages of Testimony.

Yad Vashem is also continuing the Gathering the Fragments campaign in an effort to rescue more Holocaust-related documents, artifacts, photographs and artworks, and interview, document and record video testimonies of survivors.
