President Rivlin to the Governor General

"Canada plays a key role in preventing the spread of terrorism, which threatens the stability of our region. Your long-standing and deep commitment is one of which you can be proud, and for which we are grateful."

President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Monday 1 April / 25 Adar II, began his state visit to Canada, at the invitation of Governor General Julie Payette. The ceremony was held at Government House (Rideau Hall) in Ottawa, the residence and workplace of the Governor General. After the two national anthems were played, the president and the governor general made statements to the press and then continued to a working diplomatic meeting.

The president thanked the governor general for her warm welcome and emphasized the long-standing friendship between the countries: “Our countries are old friends, going back to our independence. I am here to celebrate 70 years of Israeli-Canadian relations. It is a relationship that we value deeply, based on shared values and shared hopes for a better world.”

The president added, “Canada plays a key role in preventing the spread of terrorism, which threatens the stability of our region. Your long-standing and deep commitment is one of which you can be proud, and for which we are grateful. Canadians – Jews and non-Jews – played a key role in Israel’s early years and Canadian-Israelis continue to do so. Canada’s vibrant Jewish community Is a source of pride to us all. But the relations between us also look to the future, working closely together on science and technology, security and education, and many other fields that can make the world a better place.”

“As an astronaut who has seen our planet from outer space, you know that there are no limits to what humanity can achieve when we reach for the stars,” said the president to the governor general in conclusion. He gave her a scale model of the Israeli spacecraft ‘Beresheet’, a project of Israel Aerospace Industries and SpaceIL, which is scheduled to land on the moon in the next few days.

Governor General of Canada Julie Payette:  “Welcome to Canada, welcome to Rideau Hall, bruchim ha’baim (welcome in Hebrew)! For more than seventy years, Israel and Canada have had rich, personal connections in every sphere. 35,000 Canadians live in Israel and over 70,000 Israelis visit Canada each year. We have the third largest Jewish community in the world, outside of Israel, and that community enriches us every day. Israel has become a vibrant and highly innovative society. On the global stage, Canada and Israel accomplish great things, and we can continue to accomplish great things towards a more peaceful, sustainable and free world.”
