Baltimore, MD - Feb. 21, 2019 - Thousands of Jewish women worldwide will unite on the evening of Tuesday, February 26th, for Geula Gatherings of song, prayer, and dance to express a deep yearning for the geula (final redemption).
Triggered by a social media anomaly last month, a short video that was created in 2012 inexplicably came back to life and started circulating again on WhatsApp. Rivka Malka Perlman, the creator of the original video, explained to veteran Israel News Talk Radio host, Tamar Yonah, how it all happened.
“In this short video I had created for an Ahavas Yisrael event in Baltimore, I said ‘Sisters let’s come together in unity! So many terrible things are happening today, and the unity of Jewish women can have a massive ripple effect on the whole world. I know we can do this, please come, on February 26th, at Moses Montefiore Anshe Emunah.
People who saw the video on Whatsapp mistakenly thought it was this February 26th. Since the video was not on YouTube, there was no date on it. People started contacting me about wanting to come, or livestreaming the event, or replicating it for their own communities.’” The only glitch was that the video was seven years old. There was no geula event being planned for February 2019!
“At the same time,” Perlman continued, “I had been thinking about how much we are deeply yearning for the redemption. We are told by our sages that G-d will bring the ultimate redemption of our people and the end of our personal troubles in the merit of the Jewish women. This will happen in the same way the Jewish people were redeemed from their intense oppression in Egypt, due to the merit of the Jewish women.
“Miriam the prophetess gathered the women in Egypt and shared her powerful trust that G-d has already prepared their redemption. She encouraged them to fill their hearts with anticipation of the end of the oppression and the celebration of their great salvation. Together, they prepared tambourines to celebrate with. That’s what this event is about. Each of us has a spark of Miriam inside, and we too can come together with joined hearts, expressing our longing and trust in the coming redemption. We can sing G-d’s praises and celebrate now because we know G-d is bringing the geula.
Right this minute, there are hundreds of women all over the world planning Geula Gatherings. There are women in Baltimore, Sweden, the Five Towns, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Jerusalem, Toronto…and the number of cities keep growing. Since the interview with Rivka Malka last week, the list of cities now includes over 85 events, including Yad Binyamin, Haifa, Jerusalem, Tzfat, Raanana, Kever Rachel, and Ramat Beit Shemesh in Israel. In North America, gatherings are happening in Philadelphia, Deerfield Beach, FL, South Bend, IN, Brooklyn, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, Passaic/Clifton, Queens, Lakewood, Atlanta, Cleveland, Los Angeles, San Antonio, Baltimore, Silver Spring, Scottsdale, AZ, Sherman Oaks, CA, Montreal, and Toronto. Gatherings are also happening in London, Manchester, Berlin, Moscow, Basel, Gibraltar, Johannesburg, and more.
“Many special women are volunteering their amazing gifts to create evenings of song, prayer and dance. “In just one month we are more than 10,000 strong,” said Rivka Malka. “I have no words to describe the unity, collaboration, friendship, and excitement that I am witnessing. Women around the world who have never met are sharing resources and helping one another. In every community, women are working towards removing stumbling blocks to unity. Every event is free and many things have been donated. This unity shows that we finally recognize there are no walls between us. Hashem wants us to work together as a nation. No competition, no ego, no power. Just love. Uniting to serve Him. And this is just the beginning. Ultimately, this love should be expressed more and more, not only in our interactions with each other but with the entire world as we come to see that we are ALL, every religion and race, beloved children of Hashem.”
In a message of support, Rabbi Moshe Weinberger, the guiding Rabbi of this event said, “Of course, Hashem wants this, He has been wanting this for thousands of years. And He is excited about what is happening and any obstacles in the way are going to be overcome. Ashreinu, how fortunate are we that we should all be able to have a chelek (part), in what’s happening. Kadema (forward)!”
Rabbi Reuven Feinstein, the son of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein said, "It is with great pleasure that I give a bracha to the nashim (women) who are uniting their efforts to bring nachas (pleasure) to Hashem with Geula Gatherings. These tefillos (prayers) for geula (redemption) from the pure yearning hearts of the nashim are invaluable to klal yisroel and I give them a bracha for hatzlocha (success) in their endeavors."
The efforts have also been blessed by Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky, Rabbi Shmuel Rabinowitz (Rabbi of the Kotel and Israeli holy sites), Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu of Tzfat, Rabbi Avraham Sutton, Rabbi Yitzchak Ginsburgh, Rabbi Doniel Katz, Rebbetzin Cook, Rebbetzin Kolodetzky (daughter of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky), Rebbetzin Yemima Mizrachi, and Rebbetzin Orit Esther Riter.
