Jerusalem, Israel - Aug. 6, 2018 - The Maaleh School of Film and Television is a boutique film school located in Jerusalem, Israel. Maaleh aims "to build bridges across all sectors of the Jewish world, fostering deeper understanding and dialogue between religious and secular Jews." Under Director Neta Ariel, Maaleh students have been producing cutting-edge films.
The featured film on opening night at the 2018 Jerusalem Film Festival, held in the Sultan's Pool, was "The Unorthodox," directed by Maaleh graduate Eliran Malka.
The full-feature film starring Shuli Rand tells of the beginnings of the Israeli political party Shas. Rand delivers a powerful performance as Yaakov Cohen, a father whose daughter is expelled from a Beis Yaakov because of her Sephardi background. From his print shop, Cohen sparks a new political party, first in Jerusalem, then quickly, Shas grows to prominence in the Knesset. Based on fact, with real and fictional characters, under Malka's direction the film is a riveting and fascinating look at Israeli politics.
On Monday, at Lev Smadar Theater in the German Colony,"The Unorthodox" was shown to Maaleh supporters, students, and invited guests. Following the movie, the director was interviewed and answered questions from audience members.
Students in the Maaleh 4-year film-making track create short, 15-30 minute, films, which are available internationally for educational, cultural and entertaining purposes,
The Yoreinu Foundation supports a project called Film.Course.Digital. Maaleh has a small creative team producing educational resource materials for specific films. At this point materials are available for eight films. Materials for the next four will be available in the next few weeks and an additional four in the fall. These materials allow a teacher, presenter, community shaliach to use the film in formal and informal educational settings, with more content than simply screening the film and opening a discussion. Film.Course.Digital materials can be downloaded for free from the Maaleh website: http://www.maale.co.il/en/events/class
