The Story of Ohr HaTorah...
Back in October of 2011, five people sat huddled in a small living room in the Kemp Mill neighborhood of Silver Spring. They had a dream; they would create a shul where former b’nei yeshiva could continue to experience the environment of a Yeshiva while also engaging in their respective professions.
It started slowly, just a chevra of guys getting together for Shalosh Seudos on Shabbos. That eventually led to having Shacharis on Shabbos mornings located in the party room of the University Towers. After approximately 2 years, negotiations were made with the University Towers, which then allowed the minyan to maintain use of its party room throughout the week. Immediately, a nightly learning seder and maariv minyan were arranged.
The original roots that eventually allowed for the shul to come into fruition cannot be forgotten. As Harav Ahron Lopianksy Shlit”a; Rosh HaYeshiva of Yeshivas Tiferes Gedaliah (YGW) noted at the Shul’s groundbreaking; we see in Parshas Terumah a specific mention of the Yisodos Hechatzer. Why do we need to make mention of them? Rashi says they were stuck into the earth so that the curtains of the Mishkan would not move about in the wind. The Rosh HaYeshiva noted that ruchniyus needs to be grounded in order to be maintained. He highlighted how Harav Gedaliah Anemer zt”l, Harav Kalman Winter zt”l, and Harav Hillel Klavan zt”l set the foundation for the Silver Spring Jewish Community. Their vision was a community grounded firmly in Torah, while allowing for the inclusion of the greater community, and that is what Kehilas Ohr Hatorah stands for.
Shortly before Rosh Hashanah in 2014, the Shul selected Harav Michoel Frank shlit”a to be the Morah D’asra. Harav Frank has led the kehila and the greater Silver Spring community to new levels in halachah, hashkafa and d’veykus. Within months, Harav Frank’s involvement in the shul and the Greater Washington community began to grow exponentially. In addition to being the Rav, Harav Frank also serves as the treasurer for the Vaad Harabanim of Greater Washington and a Shoel U’Meishiv in Kollel Zichron Amram of Yeshivas Tiferes Gedaliah (YGW).
Very quickly, the space within the party room could not contain the amount of people wanting to daven there, so the search for a property to build a permanent home began. In the meantime, the shul moved to a large office suite located above the CVS in the Kemp Mill Shopping Center. While the space was significantly larger, those few months were very challenging as the only other tenant in the building was a church whose services always included extremely loud music that played well into the night (Shavuos night learning was constantly disrupted until well after 1:00 am, and on Purim, Megillas Esther had to be leined in another location). The Shul leadership met with Rabbi Herzel Kranz and negotiated the purchase of a corner piece of property from the Silver Spring Jewish Center. The multitude of design and regulatory hurdles were extremely taxing on the people involved, but with the help of HKB”H, construction was finally able to begin. After running a successful matching grant campaign, the finishing touches were made to the building, the final permits were obtained and in May 2017 the doors to the new home of Kehilas Ohr Hatorah opened with a beautiful and inspiring Friday night davening.
To date, Kehilas Ohr Hatorah is home to myriad of different programs. Whether it is the four daily minyanim, morning seder, night seder, daf hashavuah, halacha chaburos, n’shei shiurim, or Kol Hanearim, Ohr Hatorah has something for everyone within the community.
Now, Ohr Hatorah needs YOUR help. This is the most exciting tzedaka you’ll ever give! There is some risk here, but the rewards are eternal! Please use this opportunity to help Kehilas Ohr Hatorah continue to be a beacon of Torah for the entire Silver Spring community.
