Baltimore, MD - July 13, 2018 - For the past fourteen summers, Mechanchim from many of the Jewish institutions in the Baltimore and Silver Spring area have spent a week or two weeks learning a Sugya together, as well as hearing from some wonderful experts on education. We have also been blessed to have a program for Mechanchos for the past six years. Overall, the program is one where educators are receiving a stipend and a catered lunch, so they can be given the Kavod our educators deserve to engross themselves in Torah learning while discussing valuable ideas from top experts in education.

This program which was initiated by Mr. Joseph Friedman and me because of one innocent conversation one evening in our shul at Olney. Mr. Friedman challenged me to spend my summer learning in Olney, but I said that we need to bring our Mechnachim to Olney and then I would be happy to stay and learn. Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Manny Friedman and the dedication of Mr. Joseph Friedman, the program has been a wonderful success.

Rebbeim like Rabbi Chaim Barer of Torah Institute, Rabbi Binyomin Field of Beth Tfiloh, and Rabbi Chaim Kessler of TA have literally attended every single summer as well as many of their esteemed colleagues.

One personal highlight is seeing so many Berman teachers attend the program consistently like Rabbi Ira and Mrs. Rachel Kosowsky, Mrs Penina Blate, Rabbi Moishe Mittelman, Mrs Alanna Pepper, and many others. We have also had consistently solid showing from many Silver Spring schools like Berman, Torah School, JDS, and the Yeshiva of Greater Washington especially because of leadership from Rav Ahron Lopiansky and Rav Eli Reingold.

Baltimore schools such as Ner Yisrael, Torah Halev as well as Bais Yaakov, Bnos Yisroel, and Ohr Chadash significantly enhanced the program. Women such as Mrs. Shifra Rabenstein and Mrs. Rochelle Reingold have taken leadership roles for the women. Over the years and once again this year, we have many outstanding presenters like Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Rav Yonason Sacks, Dr. David Pelcovitz, Mrs. Eileen Kennedy-Moore, and Rabbi Aharon Hirsh Fried among many other experts.

The women’s program concluded yesterday and it seemed to be a great success.

The men will begin their program this Sunday. The program meets at the Berman Media Center 13300 Arctic Ave. Rockville, MD from Sunday to Thursday 9:45-5:30 and will focus on the topic of Kavod. Some new outstanding presenters this coming week include Rabbi Dovid and Mrs. Debbie Fox, Rabbi Akiva Sutofsky, and Rabbi Yerachmiel Garfield.

Anyone wishing to join for all or part of the program - especially if that person is in the wonderful world of Chinuch - should feel free to contact me at shieldsm@mjbha.org
