Monroe, NY - At least fourteen people were injured, three seriously, after a bungalow exploded and caught fire in upstate New York Friday morning, officials said.
Fourteen people were injured when the Monroe bungalow on Cromwell Road in Moroe, NY exploded and went up in flames early Friday around 12:15, Vini Tankasali, Department Commissioner of Emergency Services for Orange County, said. Three people were critically injured and Tankasali said at least one of the injured were airlifted. The injured are being treated at an area hospital.
The victims are believed to be students from Boro Park Yeshiva Novominsk who had rented the bungalow facility.
The boys smelled gas as they entered their home and opened a window, neighbors said.
A fire and explosion immediately broke out.
“I was in the bungalow right near here, and someone started yelling ‘fire,’” said one witness.
Tankasali said eight fire departments were able to put out the blaze in about 40 minutes. He said the fire was in a non-fire-hydrant area so other departments were called in for water.
“This area does not have hydrants, so they had to establish a remote water supply to provide water to the scene,” said Orange County Emergency Services Deputy Commissioner Vini Tankasali.
Neighbors said the bungalows are used by the Jewish community, especially during the summer.
Video from the scene shows the bungalow engulfed in flames as dozens of firefighters worked to put out the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
