Jerusalem, Israel - Apr. 11, 2018 - The central theme for this year's commemoration ceremonies and events at Yad Vashem for Yom HaShoah is "70 Years of Remembering and Building: Holocaust Survivors and the State of Israel."

The official opening ceremony for Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day, took place on Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at 8:00 pm, in Warsaw Ghetto Square, Yad Vashem, Mount of Remembrance, Jerusalem, Israel.


Israeli President Reuven Rivlin and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered remarks at the Opening Ceremony. Yad Vashem Council Chairman Rabbi Israel Meir Lau lit the Memorial Torch. Zipora Nahir spoke on behalf of the survivors.

During the ceremony, six Holocaust survivors were honored to light torches with the aid of a child or grandchild. First torch: Mirjam Lapid, second torch: Shmuel Bogler, third torch: Thea Friedman, fourth torch: Raul Teitelbaum, fifth torch: Yisaschar Dov Goldstein, and with sixth torch: Abba Naor.


During the ceremony, short videos about each of the torch-lighters were shown.

The annual ceremony featured a traditional memorial service, including the recitation of tehilim by Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi David Lau. The Rishon LeZion, Chief Rabbi of Israel Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef recited Kaddish and Cantor Zvi Weiss recited El Maleh Rahamim, the Jewish prayer for the souls of the martyrs.

Included in the audience, filling the plaza, were most of the Ambassadors to Israel, including US Ambassador David Friedman and his wife, Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and his wife, numerous Members of Knesset, including Rabbi Yehudah Glick and his daughter, MASA participants, Israeli soldiers and Chief of Police Roni Alsheikh, community leaders, and international delegations of Yad Vashem supporters. Mark Jenkins, from the Maryland/Virginia area, told reporters there was no where else he would rather be tonight, than attending the ceremony at Yad Vashem.

Singers Meshi Kleinstein and Amir Dadon and the IDF Paratroopers’ Honor Guard participated in the ceremony, which will also include narrative pieces by actor Dror Keren. The evening’s MC was Sara Beck.


Yad Vashem broadcast the Official Opening Ceremony live with simultaneous translation in English and French.
