At the beginning of this week's parsha we are once again given the reason behind the naming of Gershom (18:3-4): "Ki ger hayisi b'eretz nochria", because I was a stranger in a strange land. Here, the explanation of Eliezer's name is given as well, "Ki elokei avi b'ezri, vayatzileini micherev Paroah", apparently referring to Moshe's escape from execution at the hands of Paroah. At first glance, these names seem to be out of order. The cause for the naming of Gershom seems to have been preceded by that of Eliezer. Moshe was a stranger in Midyan after he escaped from the hands of Paroah. My Rebbe in Eretz Yisrael, R' Yeshaya Greenwald suggests that perhaps there is a different explanation behind Gershom's name. In the years leading u...
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would take a hard stance on Gaza on Saturday, but added that he is not sure what Israel will do.
“I don’t know what’s going to happen at 12 o’clock [on Saturday]. If it was up to me, I’d take a very hard stance. I can’t tell you what Israel is going to do,” Trump said in response to a question from reporter at the Oval Office.
His comments came ahead of the scheduled release of Sagui Dekel-Chen (36), Alexander (Sasha) Troufanov (29), and Yair Horn (46) as part of the hostage deal with Hamas.
Earlier this week, Trump issued a warning to Hamas and said that if it were up to him, the ceasefire and hostage deal should be cancelled if Hamas does not release all the hostages.

The White House says it will limit Associated Press journalists’ access to the Oval Office and Air Force One, an escalation of a brooding conflict between the Trump administration and the wire service this week.
“The Associated Press continues to ignore the lawful geographic name change of the Gulf of America,” White House deputy chief of staff Taylor Budowich wrote in a post Friday on the social platform X.
“This decision is not just divisive, but it also exposes the Associated Press’ commitment to misinformation. While their right to irresponsible and dishonest reporting is protected by the First Amendment, it does not ensure their privilege of unfettered access to limited spaces, like the Oval Office and Air Force One,” the spokesperson ad...
Chazal tell us that the naming of Parshas Yisro, the Sedra which contains the Aseres Hadibros, is a great honor. , The Torah goes out of its way to tell us how Yisro was greeted by Moshe Rabeinu, Ahron and other leaders (Yisro, 18:7) and was also accompanied when he left B’nei Yisroel. (18:27) Additionally, Moshe adopted Yisro’s suggestions in how to better judge the issues presented by Bnei Yisroel, with chiefs and judges serving underneath Moshe Rabeinu. (18:24) Yisro was accorded great respect at the time and holds his place of distinction to the present day by being linked with the Aseres Hadibros. This presents a profound question. What was so great about Yisro that he was deserving of such special respect by our Torah?

Baltimore, MD - Feb. 14, 2025 - A man has been released from prison after spending nearly 30 years there due to a wrongful conviction for a murder he didn't commit.
Baltimore City State's Attorney Ivan Bates and officials from the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project announced the vacatur of James Langhorne's conviction based on new evidence and new information that was learned after the trial at a press conference on Thursday.
Langhorne was arrested in Nov. 1996 for the murder of Lawrence Jones.
Bates said a combination of unreliable and conflicting witness testimonies, a trial witness who recanted, as well as the State's failure to disclose potential suspects and additional information collectively support the case for vacating Mr. Langhorne's conviction.

Baltimore, MD - Feb. 14, 2025 - When it comes to energy bills, when comparing bills from residents in Maryland and surrounding states like Pennsylvania and Virginia, residents are paying more in Maryland.
Bills provided by residents in Maryland, showed bills ranging from about $400 to $900, for homes ranging from about 1,400 to 2,000 square feet.
"When I saw that bill, I was flabbergasted," said Pikesville resident Yehuda Diamond.
However, comparing those bills to bills of residents in either similar-sized or larger homes, other fees have also contributed to the higher costs. For instance, at the beginning of the year, new rate hikes from BGE went into effect, which help pay for new and updated energy infrastructure.
In a statement, a spokesperson said, "BGE’s distribution rates,...

Ma’amad Har Sinai was about establishing a relationship between Hashem and B’nei Yisrael. In Rav Eisemann’s discussion of Ma’amad Har Sinai and the Ten Commandments in his book I brought you unto Me (V’avi eschem Eilai), he presents a beautiful analysis based on the Ramban. B’nei Yisrael is told to be “Mamleches kohanim v’goi kadosh”, and the 10 commandments define what a mamleches kohanim and goi kadosh mean, in effect representing the ‘constitution’ defining that relationship. Kohanim can mean aristocrats (Rashi) or servants of Hashem (Ramban). These two meanings are incorporated into the constitution: we are to be excellent people and also live in the knowledge that we are always avdei Hashem...
