Thunderstorms and heavy downpours hit central Israel and are set to spread and intensify throughout the country in the coming days; snowfall in the Golan Heights is also expected to continue

A new bout of turbulent weather hit Israel on Sunday morning with heavy rain and thunderstorms hitting central parts of the country. In the north, snow began falling on the Golan Heights and is set to intensify in the coming days.


The downpour is also set to intensify and spread to others areas of the country, with flooding expected across the coastal cities, the Judean Desert and the Jordan Valley.


Since the early morning hours, heavy rains already forced road closures in some areas of the country.

In the central city of Bnei Brak, Lehi Street has been closed off to traffic in both directions. In the north, Route 918 has been closed off between the Gonen and Gadot junctions. In the south, Highway 90 leading to the Dead Sea has also been closed.

The latest storm system has stoked fears of additional deaths after two back to back storms claimed the lives of at least four people less than two weeks ago.


In the meantime, Mount Hermon Ski Resort officials said Saturday the site was open for tourists as they expect the snow to accumulate further in the next few days. The weather at the resort is currently one degree below zero celsius.

The Sea of Galilee reportedly rose by 6.5 cm within the past 48 hours, setting the world's lowest sweet water lake's elevation level at 210.715 meters below sea level. The lake needs an additional 1.915 meters to reach its full capacity. Read more at YNET
