Baltimore, MD - Aug. 16, 2022 - A Maryland father and son will bike 100 miles to raise money for Chai Lifeline, an organization that supports sick children and their families.
The Bike 4 Chai ride starts in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania and continues into New York. While biking 100 miles isn't easy, Ben and Yogi Weiskind said the reason behind their long ride makes it all worthwhile.
As the duo train for a very long ride, they have a special young lady in mind.
"About eight years ago, Yogi's sister, our daughter Sarah, had a heart transplant, and for a child at the age of 10, to have a heart transplant is pretty traumatic," said Ben Weiskind.
Doctors think Sarah caught a bug that ruined her heart -- the transplant saved her life, but she lost ...

Last night, Yael Shevach, who lost her husband in a terrorist attack, wrote me the following:"This is the season for weddings, and I have just returned from a wedding -- but unlike any I had ever attended. Ephraim Rimel lost his wife Tzipi and his little girl three years ago in an accident caused by a Palestinian who was driving at an excessive rate of speed on Highway 443. Ephraim was left paralyzed from the waist down. Ayelet Coleman lost her husband Adiel in a terrorist attack. Those are the two people who were married tonight.Under the chuppah, Ayelet sat on a chair because Ephraim is confined to a wheelchair. She simply sat next to him throughout the ceremony, and that said so much. A multitude of friends and family had gathered to dance in their honor. It was amazing to me to see tha...

Some two-thirds of the world could starve to death in the event of a nuclear war between Russia and the United States, according to a Rutgers University-led study published Monday. Nuclear conflict would lead to “catastrophic” disruptions in food supplies, as sun-blocking soot and ash wilt crops around the world, researchers wrote in the peer-reviewed study published in the journal Nature Food.
Even a smaller-scale nuclear war between Pakistan and India would devastate food supplies, slash global production by 7% within five years and kill up to 2.5 billion people. Food insecurity in these cases would be deadlier than the nuclear blasts, the study predicts.
“The data tell us one thing: We must prevent a nuclear war from ever happening,” climate scientist Alan Robo...
Earlier this year, families around the world lamented the shortage of baby formula, which left many bereft of the nutritional staple. While global supply and prices of infant formula have since begun stabilizing, thousands of Israeli families are still struggling to meet the cost of the critical natal foodstuff. This has led the National Food Security Initiative, funded by the Welfare Ministry together with long-standing charity Colel Chabad, to launch an initiative to provide and deliver baby formula to the homes of families in need.
Baby formula is one of the most commonly shoplifted items, according to data presented at the announcement of the initiative’s new phase. This illustrates the critical role that baby formula plays in family life, and the desperation of less-f...
Jews who travel to Uman in Ukraine to pray at the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslev on Rosh Hashana will be risking their lives, Ukrainian Ambassador to Israel Yevgen Korniychuk warned on Monday.
“Rosh Hashana is coming and no matter what we say, Orthodox Jews will try to get to Uman again,” Korniychuk lamented in an interview from his Tel Aviv office. “We understand your willingness to go to Uman and favor your support for Ukraine, but this is not the right time. We cannot guarantee your security.”
Korniychuk said that last year, over 30,000 Breslev hassids came, mostly from Israel but also from the US, UK and France, and a similarly large gathering this year would attract attention from the Russian Army, which could attack the pilgrimage site.
Invasive spotted lanternflies, first discovered eight years ago in Pennsylvania and confirmed in Maryland, appear to be moving westward into the central United States, with new reports filed with the state agriculture departments this year in Iowa and Michigan.
But Maryland still plays an important role in stopping the pest, which can devastate grapes, hops and other crops.
Spotted lanternflies were confirmed in Kansas in 2021 and in North Carolina earlier this year. States farther west, including Utah, California and Oregon, have observed dead lanternflies, though it's unclear if the plant hoppers naturally migrated there, or hitched a ride with humans.
Even in states where infestations or dead lanternflies haven't been found, landscape...

A senior Israeli official told Ynet on Monday that Israel and Turkey are close to reaching an agreement allowing Israeli airlines to land in the country very soon.
The official predicted that Israeli airlines would be granted permission to fly into Istanbul in a matter of weeks.
Following the signing of a new mutual aviation agreement between the two countries last month, the parties are now finalizing the details that will allow Israeli airlines to fly to Turkey while meeting Israel’s stringent security requirements.
Disagreements over security have kept Israeli airlines out of Turkish airports for the past 15 years.
According to the official, the next step in the reconciliation process between Jerusalem and Ankara will be the return of ambassadors.

The walkout in Southern California marks the first coordinated labor action in Amazon’s growing airfreight division, which uses Prime-branded planes to fly packages and goods around the country much like UPS or FedEx. The employees, who are independently organized, said they didn’t plan to return to work on Monday, in an effort to pressure Amazon to raise wages and improve safety.
Organizers said more than 150 people walked out Monday afternoon, and managers had already slowed some operations in anticipation of the action. While a small fraction of the 1,500 employees who work at the hub in various shifts walked out, such a work stoppage can create logistical headaches and disruptions.
Amazon spokesman Paul Flaningan contested that number, saying the company’s tally of ...
An effort to recall Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón was rejected on Monday after organizers failed to submit enough valid petition signatures to get the matter on the ballot.
The Los Angeles county clerk’s office said that of the nearly 716,000 signatures collected by organizers, just over 520,000 were found to be valid. To qualify the recall for the ballot, organizers needed to submit 566,857 valid signatures, the county clerk’s office said.
Nearly 200,000 signatures were deemed invalid for various reasons. In some cases, the signatures were found to come from people who were not registered to vote, or whose signatures didn’t match those on their voter files. Several thousand signatures came from people with addresses outside of L.A. Cou...
