Mahmoud Ezzat, the acting head of the Muslim Brotherhood, was arrested in Cairo, Egyptian authorities said Friday, as cited by Reuters.

The arrest was made as the police raided a safe house in the Fifth Settlement -- a well-off area in the Egyptian capital, the agency reports. 

The police seized equipment used for encrypted communications at the premises, the report adds.

Mahmoud Ezzat is the deputy of Mohamed Badie, the previous Brotherhood leader, and took over the movement in 2013 after Badie's arrest. Read more at i24
