Rep. Nydia Velázquez and Rep. Brian Mast have sponsored a bill in Congress to posthumously award the 2017 Congressional Gold Medal to Rabbi Michoel Ber Weissmandl in recognition of his acts of valor during World War II. Rep. Velázquez hosted a congressional reception on October 24 to better acquaint her Congressional colleagues with Rabbi Weissmandl’s activities, which saved thousands of Eastern European Jews during the Holocaust. Rabbi Sholom Friedmann from Amud Aish Memorial Museum in Brooklyn was available to explain the exhibits he had brought from the museum's collections to illustrate Rabbi Weissmandl's activities.

Rabbi Weissmandl was responsible for the rescue of thousands of people during the Nazi Holocaust. He was one of the architects of the Kindertransport, which brought thousands of Jewish children to England, out of harm’s way. Amud Aish Memorial Museum brought original manuscripts and photos of artifacts to a Congressional reception to illustrate the grave situation that Jews in Hungary were facing, and the tragic fate that most of them suffered. Included was an original copy of the “Auschwitz Protocols,” a booklet that documented the atrocities being committed, transcribed from the eyewitness accounts of escaped prisoners. There were also facsimiles of telegrams sent by Rabbi Weissmandl, begging for assistance on behalf of the facing transport to extermination camps. Rabbi Sholom Friedmann, executive director, was there to explain the museum’s artifacts and to provide context.
