Baltimore, MD - Mar. 2, 2022 - “Hey, kids, want to learn how to pick a lock?”

That would get my attention, but it wasn’t exactly the approach that Chaverim of Baltimore took! They showed some boys of the Baltimore Chesed League (BCL) examples of how they help the community. Chaverim recently hosted a few of the boys from Team Blue Ocean for a hands-on presentation.

The BCL boys were shown safety and preventative measures to avoid getting into emergency situations. They were able to see how to change a tire, jump start a battery and use different techniques to unlock a car. They also learned of the many chesed services that Chaverim performs for our community.

Besides unlocking cars, particularly if there is an emergency situation when a child is locked inside, Chaverim can also help unlock house doors using special tools in the event that keys are lost or inside the house. Chaverim is often called upon when people unexpectedly run out of gas, or, G-d forbid, are in an accident. They may be out there directing traffic, pulling out stuck cars, or helping in any possible way. In addition, they run a WhatsApp group of over 220 volunteers, which can be especially helpful in times when men are needed for a shiva minyan or for a funeral.

These young boys, already involved in chesed, now have an even better idea of how they will be able to help in other ways once they are older. Kol haKavod Chaverim and the Baltimore Chesed League.

Chaverim is always looking for additional dedicated volunteers. If you would like to get involved and help out with shiva minyanim, dispatching or responding to calls please reach out to our director David Bagan 443-928-5361.
