The US Commerce Department filed a petition Monday to start implementing President Donald Trump’s executive order curtailing legal protections for social media giants, the Federalist reports.

The petition asks the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to clarify the conditions under which social media giants can rely on protections granted to them under Section 230 of Communications Decency Act.

The legislation in question asserts that social media giants are not legally viewed as publishers for the information posted by users.
