Stebbins Anderson, the furniture and housewares store in The Shops at Kenilworth, is closing Dec. 31 after more than 150 years in business, its owner said.

“It was really difficult,” said owner Ken Knight.  “It hurts. In the internet world, if you don’t have the dollars to have several stores to set up avenues to sell your products, you can’t compete. I’m in a world of shrinking sales due to the internet.”

Stebbins has 18 full-time employees and 22 part-time employees. Everything in the store is 30% off. Though Knight and his wife, Bonnie, bought the store in 2015, he has been with the store for more than 30 years, when he was hired as an accountant.

"Traffic in malls gets smaller every year," he said.

Stebbins began in 1867 as a Towson coal, lumber and hardware business called Cochrane Lumber Co. The company went by various names until 1911, when Mr. Stebbins and Mr. Anderson -- first names are unknown -- purchased the company and renamed it the Stebbins Anderson Coal and Lumber Co., Inc.
