Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, the widow of Maryland 7th District Congressman Elijah Cummings, has planned a “special announcement” for Tuesday morning in West Baltimore.

On Oct. 31, two weeks after her husband’s death, Cummings told the Baltimore Sun that she was considering running for her husband’s seat as she would look to continue his legacy of public service.

Cummings is the current Maryland Democratic Party Chairman. She had sought the Democratic nomination for governor last year but ended her campaign, due in part to her husband's poor health.

Cummings’ announcement comes days after the Republican activist who sparked a week of Twitter attacks launched her own campaign for the 7th District seat.

Kimberly Klacik used a FOX News Channel appearance on Saturday to launch her campaign.

Klacik’s social media videos showed rats, trash and abandoned house in a Baltimore City neighborhood in the district led.

Klacik's appearance on Fox News in July led President Trump to attack Cummings and the city, describing it as "a dirty rat infested" city, and blaming the late congressman for its conditions.

At her husband’s funeral last month, Maya Cummings told the crowd that Trump’s comments hurt her husband.

Without mentioning the president by name, she said Cummings’ job became “infinitely more difficult in the last months of his life when he sustained personal attacks and attacks on his beloved city.”

“While he carried himself with grace and dignity in all public forums, it hurt him,” she said.

Governor Larry Hogan has called a special primary election for February 4, and the special general election to complete Congressman Cummings’ term is set for April 28, the same day as Maryland’s Primary Elections.

On that day, voters in the 7th District would pick the candidate to fill the seat until January 2021,  They would also nominate candidates to serve a full two-year term that begins in January 2021.

As of Friday, three other Republicans and eight Democrats had filed paperwork with the Maryland State Board of Elections to run in the special primary.

Two Democrats who have announced, former congressman and NAACP President Kweisi Mfume and Baltimore City Del. Talmadge Branch, have not filed their paperwork yet.

Baltimore City state Sen. Jill Carter has formed an exploratory committee.

The filing deadline is Nov. 20.

The 7th Congressional District is made up of parts of Baltimore City and Baltimore and Howard counties. Cummings routinely won reelection over Republican challengers by wide margins.

Congressman Cummings had chaired the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, one of three congressional committees involved in the impeachment investigation.

He died last month after a long illness.
