Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 7, 2023  - "I want to assure you that Har Hazeisim is entirely safe to visit,” Chief Inspector Doron Turgeman told Avraham Lubinsky, co-chairman of the ICHH, in a recent call. Chief Inspector Turgeman,   head of the Israel Police, Jerusalem Division, is committed to upgrade security including utilizing state of the art technology to stave off vandalism and improve security for visitors. “We are constantly monitoring the best ways of upgrading security and I am committed to overseeing some of the recommendations of our security experts and the ICHH.”

Thanks to the efforts of the ICHH, there have been few reported incidents on Har Hazeisim since 2015, a marked improvement from the vandalism and grave desecration of earlier years. According to police officials, the number of daily visitors has averaged over 3,000 in addition to crowds who attend levayos and yahrzeits of major luminaries. In 2014, the number of visitors averaged only 500 a day.

Police secured the levaya of Harav Boruch Mordechai Ezrachi zt”l who passed away recently and was buried next to his wife on Har Hazeisim.  Thousands made their way from Bayit Vegan to Har Hazeisim despite a police limit on assemblages. Several American visitors reported visiting in the past few weeks without incident. The Har Hazeisim security escort service was available throughout the past few weeks.

MK Rabbi Erez Malull, chairman of the Knesset Caucus on Har Hazeisim told ICHH that he continues to closely monitor the security situation on Har Hazeisim and the surrounding areas. Minister Yitzchak Goldknopf, who heads the Ministry of Housing and Construction, and succeeded in arranging a historic grant of NIS 110 million for security on Har Hazeisim is also in close contact with the committee to plan out the best course of action to secure and develop Har Hazeisim.

Moshe Bruce, the executive director of ICHH based in Yerushalayim is on Reserve duty but continues to be involved in managing the affairs of Har Hazeisim. Mr. Bruce has been in contact with the leaders of ICHH despite being on the front lines. He hopes to resume efforts to finalize plans for the construction of the Visitor Education Center on Har Hazeisim.

“While Jews the world over are deeply concerned with the situation in Gaza and elsewhere, we must assure that the 150,000 kedoshim who are buried on Har Hazeisim can rest in peace and with dignity,” said Mr. Lubinsky. He said that he has the commitment from the police that all visitors to Har Hazeisim will be entirely safe.
