New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Thursday that his office aims to lift almost all coronavirus restrictions and "fully" reopen the "Big Apple" on July 1, 2021.

"Our plan is to fully reopen New York on July 1, we are ready for stores, businesses, offices, and theaters to reopen at full power," he said Thursday on MSNBC.

De Blasio cited recent scientific data from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene showing an overall improvement in vaccination rates against COVID-19 and a decrease in hospitalization rates as reasons for the decision. 

“We can see that light at the end of the tunnel,” he said at a press conference. “This is going to be the summer of New York City.”

As of Wednesday, some 6.3 million New Yorkers have received at least one dose of the vaccinated, city statistics show, while 2.4 million people have been fully inoculated against COVID-19.
